Wando County Council Conducts Emergency Inspections of Aquaculture Farms Amid Heat Wave Warning: "Mass Mortality Must Be Prevented"

"Repeated Damage from Climate Change...
Urgent Need for Preventive Measures"

The Wando County Council in South Jeolla Province recently conducted on-site inspections and listened to the opinions of fishers by visiting aquaculture farms and the Wando Flatfish Aquaculture Association after mass mortality of farmed seafood occurred due to high water temperatures.

According to the council on August 9, high water temperature warnings are currently in effect for Gogum-myeon and Gunoe-myeon, while high water temperature advisories have been issued for the remaining ten towns and townships. There have been reports of flatfish mortality at some aquaculture farms, raising concerns about the potential spread of damage.

On this day, Chairman Kim Yanghun and all council members visited three aquaculture farms in Gunoe-myeon to inspect the status of fish stress and mortality caused by abnormal water temperatures, as well as the response conditions of the fishers.

The council encouraged aquaculture farmers who have been striving to minimize damage since the high water temperature warnings were issued and directly identified the difficulties they are facing on-site. After completing the inspections, the council members visited the Wando Flatfish Aquaculture Association to hear about the current response to high water temperatures and industry issues.

Chairman Kim stated, "As high water temperature damage caused by climate change is repeated every year, preventive measures and systematic support are more important than ever," and added, "The county council will do its utmost to develop practical support measures in cooperation with the administration, based on feedback from the field."

The council also announced plans to continuously review related systems and budgets to proactively respond to changes in the marine environment caused by climate change.
