Man in His 70s Using Motorized Wheelchair Dies After Falling Down Apartment Elevator Shaft in Changwon

At around 3:55 p.m. on August 7, a man in his 70s using a motorized wheelchair fell from the fifth floor to the bottom of an elevator shaft in an apartment building in Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province.

Mr. A was urgently transported to the hospital by firefighters who responded to a report from the building management office staff, but he ultimately died.

At the time of the accident, it was determined that the elevator had functioned normally and ascended after Mr. A exited on the fifth floor.

The police suspect that, for an unknown reason, the motorized wheelchair collided with the closed elevator door, causing the door to open and resulting in Mr. A's fall.

The police are investigating the exact circumstances of the accident, including analyzing closed-circuit (CC) TV footage.
