Suwon City Establishes Carbon Neutrality Practice Guidelines for the Public Sector

Suwon City in Gyeonggi Province has established and is implementing the 'Suwon City Public Sector Carbon Neutrality Practice Guidelines.'

The newly established guidelines consist of three areas?daily operations, meeting management, and events and festivals?with a total of 10 tasks and 35 specific action rules.

The daily operations area aims to create an eco-friendly work environment by reducing energy consumption and conserving resources in office spaces.

Key action rules include minimizing heating and cooling energy usage, using public transportation, minimizing printed materials and transitioning to digital formats, and purchasing green products.

The meeting management area focuses on spreading a digital-based, low-carbon meeting culture through online meetings and the use of electronic materials. Main action rules include operating paperless meetings, using reusable containers, producing eco-friendly promotional materials, and reducing heating and cooling in meeting rooms.

The events and festivals area aims to establish a carbon-neutral operational system by incorporating eco-friendly elements throughout all stages from planning to operation and evaluation. Key action rules include analyzing public transportation accessibility, streamlining event programs, and planning and operating zero-waste (minimizing waste) events.

The carbon neutrality practice guidelines apply not only to Suwon City but also to all public sector organizations, including public institutions, funded and affiliated organizations, and public facilities and related agencies.

Suwon City plans to implement the carbon neutrality practice guide throughout all processes, from the preliminary planning to the post-event evaluation of meetings, events, and festivals.

To enhance compliance with the guidelines, Suwon City will also establish a system for regular inspections. Each department will submit the results of its action checklists on a quarterly basis, which will be reviewed and monitored to verify implementation status.

A Suwon City official stated, "The Suwon City Public Sector Carbon Neutrality Practice Guidelines will serve as a standard for systematically embedding carbon neutrality throughout administration," adding, "We hope that the public sector will lead in practicing energy conservation and resource circulation, and that the culture of carbon neutrality will spread throughout citizens' daily lives."
