Naju and Hampyeong Designated as Special Disaster Zones
A Total of 15 Areas in Gwangju and Jeonnam Included
Kim Youngrok, Governor of Jeonnam, expressed his welcome regarding the government's additional declaration of special disaster zones.
On August 6, through his Facebook account, Governor Kim stated, "In addition to Damyang, Naju and Hampyeong in Jeonnam have also been newly designated as special disaster zones," and added, "We will do our utmost to ensure swift recovery and compensation support for affected residents."
On this day, the government additionally designated a total of 36 areas nationwide, including 15 locations in Gwangju and Jeonnam, as special disaster zones.
Specifically, the entire Buk-gu district of Gwangju and three areas in Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju?Eoryong-dong and Samdo-dong?were included in this round of special disaster zone designations. In Jeonnam, the entire jurisdictions of Naju city and Hampyeong county were selected at the city and county level. At the town, township, and neighborhood level, Daap-myeon in Gwangyang city, Ganjeon-myeon and Toji-myeon in Gurye county, Iseo-myeon in Hwasun county, Gunnam-myeon and Yeomsan-myeon in Yeonggwang county, and Jido-eup, Imja-myeon, Jaeun-myeon, and Heuksan-myeon in Shinan county were designated.
These areas suffered severe human and material damage due to heavy rainfall of over 500mm for three days starting from July 17.
As special disaster zones, a portion of the restoration costs that would normally be borne by local governments will be covered by the national government. In particular, affected residents will receive disaster relief funds as well as 13 types of benefits, including deferment of national and local tax payments.
