According to the Archdiocese of Seoul, Pope Leo XIV revealed the schedule for the 2027 Seoul World Youth Day main event during the '2025 Jubilee for Young People' closing Mass held in the Tor Vergata district of Rome, Italy.
The closing Mass, presided over by Pope Leo XIV, was attended by approximately one million young pilgrims from around the world. From Korea, about 1,000 members of the Seoul Archdiocese's '1004 Project' pilgrimage group participated. As the delegation from the next host country, the Korean pilgrims were assigned seats closest to the altar.
In his homily, Pope Leo XIV encouraged the faithful to "continue living in the joy experienced during the pilgrimage, even after returning to your own countries at the end of this Jubilee journey."
At the end of the Mass, Pope Leo XIV officially announced that the main event of the 2027 Seoul World Youth Day will take place from August 3 to August 8. The Pope emphasized, "Let us dream of hope together until we meet again in Seoul," and added, "I will join young people from all over the world at the 2027 Seoul World Youth Day."
The 2027 Seoul World Youth Day Organizing Committee (Chairman: Archbishop Chung Soon-taick) is currently intensifying preparations to ensure the successful hosting of the event. The Archdiocese of Seoul expects that at least 400,000 to as many as 800,000 people will gather for the closing Mass, which will mark the finale of the 2027 World Youth Day. As the event will be held in August, during the peak of summer, special attention is being paid to measures against the heat and to securing accommodations.
The World Youth Day, a global Catholic youth festival, is well known as an event where the Pope meets with young people. It officially began in 1986, following Pope John Paul II's invitation to young people from around the world to gather at the Vatican in 1984 and 1985 during his papacy.
The most recent World Youth Day was held in August 2023 in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, during the papacy of Pope Francis. At the closing Mass, Pope Francis announced that the next host city would be Seoul.
