For the first time in China, a humanoid robot has been admitted to a university doctoral program.
According to Chinese local media on August 2, the humanoid robot "Xueba 01," jointly developed by DroidUp Robotics and Shanghai University of Engineering and Technology, has been admitted to the Theater and Film major at Shanghai Theatre Academy, a comprehensive arts university.
The admission of Xueba 01 to the doctoral program is part of a plan by Shanghai Theatre Academy and Shanghai University of Engineering and Technology to train doctoral-level experts in robotics, and was carried out as part of research into the convergence of art and technology.
Xueba 01 has announced its research topic as "A Study on the Convergence of Cross-Media Art in Digital Performing Arts Design by Humanoid Robots."
"Xueba" means "model student" in Chinese. The robot is 1.75 meters tall and weighs approximately 30 kilograms. Xueba 01 has been issued a virtual student ID number, and Yang Qingqing, a transmedia artist, has been appointed as its academic advisor.
