Liberation Day Ceremony, Performances, and Independence Movement Videos at City Hall on the 15th
Lee Sangil: "Inheriting the Spirit of Our Fallen Heroes to Pioneer a Bright Future for the City"
Yongin City, Gyeonggi Province, announced on August 1 that it will hold the event "Yongin! Advancing Powerfully with Light" at City Hall at 6:00 p.m. on August 15, Liberation Day, to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Korea's liberation.
The theme of the event, "Yongin! Advancing Powerfully with Light," is a reference to the final phrase of the March 1st Independence Declaration, which reads, "We simply march vigorously toward the light that lies ahead."
The event was planned by a diverse "80th Anniversary of Liberation Task Force (TF)" composed of various organizations, including the Gyeonggi Eastern Veterans Affairs Office, the Yongin Chapter of the Liberation Association, the Yongin Office of Education, the Yongin Cultural Center, the Yongin Cultural Foundation, the Yongin Youth Future Foundation, and the Dankook University Student Council.
The festivities will begin with the "Liberation Day Commemoration Ceremony" at Ace Hall in City Hall at 5:00 p.m. Starting at 6:00 p.m., the "80th Anniversary of Liberation Program with Citizens" will take place at the Sky Plaza at City Hall. The event will feature a variety of programs and food booths, including a photo zone, SNS event zone, workshops for making Liberation sun caps, independence fans, and Taegeukgi keyrings, traditional game experiences, and the Joayong promotional booth.
At 7:00 p.m., the main performance will begin with a traditional Korean music performance by "Cheongarak" from Dankook University. This will be followed by performances from soprano Kim Heejeong and Jeon Hyangjin, the first singer from Hamgyeong Province featured on "Miss Trot 2." The children's musical troupe Little Yongin will present an original musical themed on independence activists from Yongin.
The festival will conclude with a gala show by the "Liberation 80 Citizens' Choir," composed of 80 citizens, a choral performance titled "Songs of Independence Revisited," and the "Manse Samchang" (Three Cheers for Independence) shout-out with all performers and citizens.
The performances will also include videos highlighting Yongin's independence movement. These include the story of Samak School, which revived the Wonsam-myeon Jukneung-ri independence movement using augmented reality (AR) technology, a special video on the descendants of Yongin's independence activists, and a video featuring Oh Huiok, the last female member of the Liberation Army, who passed away in November last year.
The festival is open to all citizens free of charge. In case of rain, outdoor events will be moved indoors. For more information about the event, inquiries can be made to the Welfare Policy Division of Yongin City Hall.
Lee Sangil, Mayor of Yongin, said, "We have planned this citizen cultural festival to deliver a message of hope to pioneer a bright future for our country and for Yongin, inheriting the patriotic spirit of our fallen heroes."
