Leavitt: "Signing to Take Place This Afternoon or Evening"
U.S. President Donald Trump will sign an executive order on July 31 (local time) to implement new reciprocal tariffs starting August 1, according to the White House.
White House spokesperson Caroline Leavitt stated during a briefing that "the signing will take place this afternoon or evening (July 31)," and added, "The reciprocal tariffs will take effect from August 1."
President Trump had previously postponed the implementation of the reciprocal tariffs twice, but with the expiration of the postponement measures, the tariffs will actually be imposed starting at 12:01 a.m. on August 1. Countries that reached trade agreements with the United States during the tariff postponement period, including South Korea, will be subject to adjusted rates according to the terms of their agreements. In contrast, countries that have not yet concluded negotiations will be subject to the tariff rates specified in the letter President Trump sent earlier this month.
Leavitt warned, "Countries that have not yet reached an agreement or have not received the letter will be contacted by the U.S. administration by the midnight deadline today."
She added, "Foreign leaders are recognizing that this deadline (August 1) will become a real issue starting tomorrow and are calling President Trump to present their negotiation proposals."
Meanwhile, ahead of the implementation of the reciprocal tariffs, President Trump commented on his own social networking service, Truth Social, stating, "Tariffs are making America great and prosperous again." He emphasized, "Tariffs have been used successfully against the United States for decades, but now the tide has completely turned and America has responded successfully to the onslaught of tariffs."
