Yeongam County in South Jeolla Province has presented a new model for local culture by simultaneously hosting a cultural festival, revitalizing the local economy, and providing a platform for youth policy communication through the youth-led event "Yeongam Lotto Day."
On July 31, Yeongam County announced that more than 2,000 residents and young people participated in "Yeongam Lotto Day," which was held on the afternoon of July 26 at Dalmaji Park in Yeongam-eup, making the event a great success. This event was co-hosted by the Yeongam Urban Regeneration Center and the Yeongam Cultural Tourism Foundation.
"Lotto Day" is a regular youth cultural festival held on the last Saturday of every month. It is a program that promotes local coexistence and cultural exchange based on the planning abilities of young people.
At the event, a variety of activities to beat the summer heat, such as a water gun festival, B-boy performances, and laser shows, received enthusiastic responses from residents. Including local food and experience booths, the flea market and agricultural product sales booths, which are part of the urban regeneration project, recorded 623 transactions and sales of 4.94 million won. In addition, a 26% cashback event for the local currency "Wolchul Pay" was held, driving consumption of approximately 72 million won.
The awards ceremony for the "2025 Yeongam County Youth Policy Participation Essay Contest," which took place during the event, also drew attention. Out of a total of 14 entries, the Grand Prize went to Choi Jeyoon for "I Could Not Settle Down, But Finally Took Root," the Excellence Award went to Lee Sunyoung for "How the Yeongam Local Creator Development Project Changed My Life," and the Encouragement Award went to Kang Hyeju for "You Can Love As Much As You Know."
Choi Jeyoon, the Grand Prize winner, received widespread empathy for sincerely sharing his experience of settling in the region through the Yeongam youth public rental housing policy, and delivered his remarks in person at the awards ceremony.
Kim Sunmi, head of the Yeongam County Population and Youth Division, stated, "Lotto Day, which is led by youth and joined by the local community, is establishing itself as a sustainable model for local culture that goes beyond a simple festival," adding, "We will continue to expand opportunities for youth-centered cultural events and policy participation in a more diverse manner."
