Carrying On the Spirit of the 3.15 Uprising,
the First Democratization Movement in Modern Korean History
The 3·15 Youth Literature Award was established in 2020 to carry on the spirit of the 3·15 Uprising, the first democratization movement in modern Korean history, and to create opportunities for young writers. The award is co-hosted by Kyungnam University and the 3·15 Uprising Memorial Foundation, and organized by the Kyungnam University Press.
Now in its sixth year, this literary award was open to university students nationwide. A total of 119 poems, 16 short stories, and 4 children's stories were submitted to the respective categories.
As a result of the judging, in the poetry category, Jung Jin-ho (2nd year, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Seoul National University) won with "How to Keep a Bouquet Fresh for a Long Time." The runner-up was Shin Hee-soo (1st year, Department of Creative Writing, Seoul Institute of the Arts) with "Growing Pains."
In the short story category, Choi Goeun (4th year, Department of Korean Language Education, Kyungnam University) won with "Where the Little Yellow One Passed By." In the children's story category, there was no grand prize winner, but Kim Wonji (4th year, Department of Creative Writing, Dankook University) was selected as the runner-up with "Would You Like to End the Game?"
Hong Junghyo, Vice President for Academic Affairs at Kyungnam University, said, "Congratulations to all the winners of the 6th 3·15 Youth Literature Award," and added, "I hope today's achievement will serve as a stepping stone for you to grow into outstanding writers in the future."
He continued, "I would like to thank Chairman Joo Imhwan of the 3·15 Uprising Memorial Foundation, as well as all those involved, the judges, and the university students nationwide who participated with great passion."
Joo Imhwan, Chairman of the 3·15 Uprising Memorial Foundation, said, "I extend my heartfelt congratulations to all the recipients who received the award at Kyungnam University, a historic site of the democratization movement."
He added, "I sincerely hope that the spirit of freedom, democracy, and justice that has been passed down from the 3·15 Uprising will continue through you to future generations, and that the ideals you have expressed through literature will become significant milestones in your lives."
The award ceremony was attended by Hong Junghyo, Vice President for Academic Affairs at Kyungnam University, Joo Imhwan, Chairman of the 3·15 Uprising Memorial Foundation, Seo Saetbyeol, Director of the Media and Publishing Institute at Kyungnam University, Byun Jongmin, Chair of the 3·15 Youth Literature Award Steering Committee, Jeong Ilgeun, Advisor, and Kim Eunjeong, Judge, who all congratulated the winners.
