Possibility of Related Bill Passing U.S. Congress
Trump: "100% Tariff on Countries Purchasing Russian Crude Oil"
Reuters reported on July 29 (local time) that the United States has warned China that it could impose ultra-high tariffs of up to 500% if China purchases Russian crude oil subject to sanctions.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Besant made this statement during a press conference concluding the two-day third round of U.S.-China trade talks held in Stockholm, Sweden.
He mentioned the possibility of the U.S. Congress passing a bill that would allow the United States to impose tariffs of up to 500% on countries purchasing Russian crude oil. He added, "U.S. allies will also be compelled to take similar measures to cut off Russia's energy revenues."
He further stated, "Anyone purchasing Russian crude oil subject to sanctions should prepare for this measure."
Previously, U.S. President Donald Trump warned on July 28 that, as Russia has not made progress in peace negotiations with Ukraine, the United States would impose secondary tariffs of 100% on countries purchasing Russian crude oil within 10 to 12 days.
Regarding this, Secretary Besant reported that the Chinese side responded by stating that China is a sovereign country with energy needs, and that its crude oil purchases are determined based on domestic policy.
Secretary Besant said, "China places great importance on its sovereignty, and we do not wish to infringe upon their sovereignty," adding, "That is why it seems they are willing to pay the 100% tariff."
