BS Hanyang Selected as Preferred Negotiation Partner for
96MW-Class BESS Installation in Gwangyang and Goheung
The Gwangyang Bay Area Free Economic Zone Authority (headed by Koo Choongon, hereinafter referred to as Gwangyang FEZ Authority) announced on July 30 that BS Hanyang Co., Ltd. (CEO Choi Inho, hereinafter referred to as BS Hanyang), which signed an investment agreement last month, has been selected as the preferred negotiation partner for a project to install and operate 96MW-class Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in both Gwangyang and Goheung as part of the '2025 1st ESS Central Contract Market Competitive Bidding.'
BS Hanyang participated in the '2025 1st ESS Central Contract Market Competitive Bidding' announced by Korea Power Exchange as a consortium with Korea South-East Power. As BS Hanyang was selected as the preferred negotiation partner on July 23, the company plans to install a 96MW-class BESS on a 13,708㎡ site in the Hwanggeum Industrial Complex in Gwangyang and on a 17,991㎡ site in Goheung County, respectively. The project is scheduled to break ground early next year and be completed by the end of the same year.

The ESS Central Contract Market Competitive Bidding reflects the ESS adoption scale included in the 11th Basic Plan for Long-term Electricity Supply and Demand. Through this bidding, a total of 540MW of ESS will be introduced to both the mainland and Jeju. This project is being promoted to address the frequent output control that occurs when solar and wind power plants are forced to stop electricity production during periods of low electricity demand, as the share of renewable energy centered on solar power has rapidly increased recently.
If BS Hanyang establishes a large-scale BESS facility within the Hwanggeum Industrial Complex, it is expected to strengthen the stability of the power grid and reduce the frequency of output control for renewable energy generation.
Koo Choongon, head of the Gwangyang FEZ Authority, stated, "We plan to provide administrative support to ensure that BS Hanyang's large-scale BESS construction project is realized at the Hwanggeum Industrial Complex, serving as an opportunity to contribute to power system stabilization and alleviation of renewable energy output control."
