Goyang City and Korea Water Resources Survey and Technology Institute Sign Agreement for Waterfront Development and Disaster Prevention

Joining Hands to Build a Safe and Pleasant River Environment
Expanding Citizen-Centered Waterfront Spaces

Goyang Special City in Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Lee Donghwan) and the Korea Water Resources Survey and Technology Institute (President Lee Younggi, hereafter referred to as the Institute) announced on July 29 that they had signed a 'Business Agreement for River Environmental Conservation and Water Resource Management' at the Open Mayor’s Office of Goyang City Hall.

The purpose of this agreement is to share and cooperate with each other's human and material resources in order to create waterfront spaces where citizens can safely enjoy themselves and to establish a river disaster prevention system.


The signing ceremony was attended by Lee Donghwan, Mayor of Goyang Special City, Lee Byungyoung, Director of the Green City Project Office, Kim Jooyoung, Head of the Ecological River Division, Lee Younggi, President of the Korea Water Resources Survey and Technology Institute, Lee Chungdae, Director of Planning and Management Headquarters, and Shim Eunjeung, Director of Strategic Planning Office, along with other officials from both organizations.


The main points of the agreement include: △ joint cooperation in environmental conservation and water resource management of local rivers; and △ joint promotion of community contribution activities such as environmental education and campaigns.


Goyang City, known as a city of water with a total of 70 rivers, plans to further accelerate the expansion of safe and enjoyable waterfront spaces for citizens and the prevention of flood damage during the summer through this agreement.


In particular, the 'Creating Rivers Where You Can Swim and Dip Your Feet' project currently underway in Changneungcheon and Gongneungcheon is expected to create even safer and more pleasant waterfront spaces through the agreement with the Institute, which has a high level of expertise in water resource management.


The Korea Water Resources Survey and Technology Institute is an organization with high expertise in providing fair water resource information and investigating flood damage situations. Through this agreement, it is expected to greatly assist not only in river management in Goyang City but also in disaster prevention related to water control in Goyang City.


Lee Donghwan, Mayor of Goyang Special City, stated, "Cooperation with the Korea Water Resources Survey and Technology Institute will be of great help in various fields such as disaster prevention, river environmental conservation, and the creation of waterfront spaces in our city." He added, "In particular, through cooperation between the Institute and the Goyang River Network, we will expand social contribution activities such as river clean-up and support for vulnerable groups, and establish an exemplary cooperation model between public institutions."
