The site of the Samchully Briquette Factory in Imun-dong, Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul, will be developed into a northeastern innovation hub that will include cultural and sports facilities. According to Dongdaemun-gu on July 28, the "Samchully Briquette Factory Site Complex Development" project has been finally selected as a target for Seoul City's Fast-Track New Growth Hub Project and will proceed with development.

The "New Growth Hub Project" promoted by the Seoul Metropolitan Government's Balanced Development Headquarters aims to foster balanced urban development by discovering and nurturing specialized industries and hubs in each region. Dongdaemun-gu achieved the distinction of being selected for this project for two consecutive years, following last year's "Hwigyeong Retarding Basin Riverside Cultural Hub Development Project."

The Samchully Briquette Factory site, located at 22-2 Imun-dong, has been a source of inconvenience for residents for a long time since the establishment of the briquette factory in 1968. Dongdaemun-gu made significant progress in resolving a long-standing wish of residents by acquiring the site in December last year.

Since May, Dongdaemun-gu has been conducting a basic planning and feasibility study for the briquette factory site, and plans to thoroughly review the project based on administrative and technical cooperation with Seoul City going forward.

Lee Pilhyung, head of Dongdaemun-gu, stated, "The complex development of the Samchully Briquette Factory site is a meaningful achievement, as it finally fulfills a long-standing wish of residents that has persisted for decades. We will continue to work closely with Seoul City to develop it into the leading innovation hub in the northeastern region, including cultural and sports facilities."
