The "Apartment Security and Cleaning Workers’ Rest Facility Improvement Project" is an initiative that Gyeonggi Province launched in 2021, making it the first among metropolitan governments to do so. The project provides financial support for the improvement of rest facilities in apartment complexes to guarantee the right to rest for security guards and cleaning workers. This year, the province aims to improve 392 additional sites in cooperation with 28 cities and counties. Upon completion, the total number of improved facilities will increase to 1,842.
Key improvements include relocating underground rest rooms to above ground and expanding essential amenities such as showers and heating and cooling systems. These efforts comply with the legal obligation under the Occupational Safety and Health Act to install rest facilities, protect the rights and interests of vulnerable workers, and improve their working environment.
Meanwhile, from May 26 to June 11, Gyeonggi Province conducted on-site inspections in 10 cities and counties, including Gwangmyeong and Paju, to review the progress of the project and gather feedback and suggestions for improvement.
The collected opinions will be reflected in the inspections scheduled for the second half of this year and in the 2026 business plan. Gyeonggi Province plans to continue monitoring the project in the second half of the year to ensure its smooth completion.
Choi Honggyu, Director of the Gyeonggi Province Labor Bureau, stated, "Security guards and cleaning workers play a crucial role in safeguarding the safety and daily lives of our residents. We will continue our efforts to spread a workplace culture that respects workers and will develop various practical support policies to ensure workers’ safety and right to rest."
