President Lee Jaemyung held his first phone conversation with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on July 24 following his inauguration.
Kang Yujeong, spokesperson for the Presidential Office, announced this in a written briefing on the same day. Kang stated that President Lee noted how relations between the two countries have developed across various fields for approximately 140 years since the establishment of diplomatic ties. President Lee also expressed his intention to further advance bilateral relations through close exchanges and communication during similar periods.
Chancellor Merz said, "Korea is an important partner in the Indo-Pacific region, and I am pleased that our two countries have maintained a close cooperative relationship for a long time based on democracy, human rights, and free trade."
Spokesperson Kang added, "The two leaders noted that both countries have continued to maintain strong economic cooperation despite uncertainties in the global economy, and agreed to continue seeking practical cooperation in a wide range of fields in the future."
