Employment Ministry Launches Special Inspection into 'Naju Migrant Worker Harassment'

Supervision to Include Violations of Labor Laws Such as Wage Arrears

The Ministry of Employment and Labor announced on July 24 that it would immediately launch a special inspection following an incident at a brick manufacturing plant in Naju, South Jeolla Province, where a Sri Lankan migrant worker was transported by forklift while tied together with brick products, threatening the worker's labor rights.

Given the seriousness of this incident, the ministry plans to investigate not only whether there was any assault or workplace harassment against migrant workers, but also to conduct a comprehensive inspection of labor-related laws, including wage arrears.

Furthermore, as discrimination and harsh treatment of migrant workers have occurred at some worksites, the ministry will pursue additional special inspections, particularly in rural areas, by gathering reports from various organizations and analyzing past case histories to prevent similar incidents from happening again.

Minister of Employment and Labor Kim Younghoon stated, "If any violations of the law are identified, we will respond strictly," and added, "We will also conduct thorough preventive inspections of workplaces employing migrant workers to ensure robust protection of their labor rights going forward."
