Mayor Lee Sangil: "Design Improvements Ensure Accessibility for All, Regardless of Disability"
Yongin City in Gyeonggi Province announced on the 24th that it has incorporated design plans that take into consideration socially disadvantaged groups, such as people with disabilities and the elderly, in the multipurpose sports facility currently under construction on the former site of Giheung Middle School in Singal-dong, Giheung-gu.
Last month, Yongin Mayor Lee Sangil visited the construction site of the multipurpose sports facility on the former site of Giheung Middle School in Singal-dong, Giheung-gu, Yongin, and inspected the improvements together with the residents. Provided by Yongin City
This facility, which is being built with a total floor area of 7,300 square meters, will include a swimming pool with six 25-meter lanes and a multipurpose gymnasium. The city aims to complete construction by December next year and open the facility in May 2027.
The improved design includes family changing rooms and showers to address the inconvenience faced by families of people with disabilities using the swimming pool. Universal seats for diaper changing will also be provided for people with disabilities and the elderly.
This reflects Mayor Lee Sangil's commitment to installing facilities for people with disabilities in all public facilities that have swimming pools.
The design improvements also incorporated feedback from a site visit conducted last month by Mayor Lee together with residents. One notable change is the expansion of the entrance's vehicle turning radius to allow large vehicles, such as mobile stage trucks for cultural performances, to enter the premises.
Additional ventilation systems will be installed to prevent vehicle exhaust from entering the underground swimming pool, and an air curtain will be added to the windbreak room. The city also plans to open the underground parking lot, which has 126 spaces, to nearby residents for use during the evening hours.
Mayor Lee stated, "The new multipurpose sports facility will be designed so that all citizens, regardless of disability, can use it comfortably," and added, "We will ensure that construction reflecting the improved design proceeds without delay, making this a space loved by the community."
