"Building the 'AI Highway'... Government Discusses Strategy for Superintelligent Network Infrastructure" Yonhap News Agency

The government has begun formulating a strategy for ultra-high-performance network infrastructure to build an 'AI Highway' that will lead the era of artificial intelligence (AI). The National Policy Planning Committee's AI Task Force, which is drafting the five-year policy blueprint for the Lee Jaemyung administration, held its second roundtable on 'AI National Policy Initiatives Made Together' in Seoul on July 22, discussing with private-sector experts the direction for fostering next-generation network industries to support AI technology.

At the roundtable, Kim Sunmi, a research fellow at the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), emphasized, "As AI emerges as a new user of networks, infrastructure with a fundamentally different level of performance is required." She stated, "In the AI era, advanced networks are not merely a means of connection but a foundational infrastructure that determines national competitiveness," and proposed that the network industry should be fostered as a national strategic industry.

The participants unanimously agreed on the need to secure superintelligent network technologies such as 6G at an early stage and to create demand by expanding pilot projects for AI services. Policy tasks such as data classification and grading, securing leadership in network standards, and nurturing specialized talent were also presented.

Song Kyunghee, head of the AI Task Force at the National Policy Planning Committee, said, "To become one of the world's top three AI powers, advanced network infrastructure is a prerequisite," adding, "We will actively reflect today's discussions in the national policy agenda and implementation plans."
