If You Can't Stand the Heat, Come Here... GS25 Daegu City Center Branch Opens 24-Hour Cooling Shelter

Jung-gu District Office in Daegu (headed by Ryu Kyuhwa) designated a convenience store as a cooling shelter for the first time among local governments in Daegu on July 14, in order to protect local residents from the summer heat wave.


The Jung-gu District Office signed a "business agreement for the operation of a cooling shelter" with the GS25 Daegu City Center Branch. Under this agreement, the store owner is responsible for opening the facility and providing basic amenities, while the district office is in charge of installing and managing shelter signage.

The convenience store cooling shelter will remain open 24 hours a day, not only on weekdays but also on weekends and public holidays, until September 30. It is freely accessible to everyone. By designating a convenience store with air conditioning and excellent accessibility as a shelter, the district office expects it to provide a practical protective space for citizens, including the elderly, who may have difficulty staying outdoors for extended periods.


Currently, Jung-gu, Daegu operates a total of 90 cooling shelters, including senior centers and administrative welfare centers. The locations of nearby shelters can be checked on the National Disaster Safety Portal.


On the morning of July 21, Ryu Kyuhwa, head of Jung-gu District Office, personally visited the GS25 Daegu City Center Branch to inspect the shelter signage and facilities. He stated, "Operating cooling shelters in cooperation with the private sector is a very meaningful collaborative model for protecting the health and safety of residents," and added, "We will continue to establish a thorough heat wave response system to create a city where everyone can escape the heat."
