U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that he will work to help Afghans who assisted U.S. forces during the Afghanistan war and have been living as refugees in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) since the Taliban took power, but are now facing imminent forced deportation to their home country.
On July 20 (local time), President Trump posted on the social media platform Truth Social, linking to a news report stating that Afghan aides to U.S. forces and their families, currently residing in refugee camps in the UAE, have been notified by UAE authorities that they will be forcibly deported to Afghanistan this week. He wrote, "I will work to save them. I will start immediately."
However, President Trump did not specify whether he would grant them refugee status and allow them to seek asylum in the United States, or assist them in relocating to a third country, leaving his exact plans unclear.
According to the U.S. media report linked by President Trump, after the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan in 2021, the UAE accepted those who had assisted U.S. troops during the Afghanistan war, along with their families, as refugees and allowed them to stay in a refugee camp in Abu Dhabi for four years.
However, this week, UAE officials reportedly notified 32 Afghans residing in the refugee camp to prepare for deportation to Afghanistan, which is currently under Taliban rule.
