Can You Use Black Tea Bags but Not Vaseline? ... Essential Skin Care Tips for the Heatwave

Avoid Vaseline and Use Cooled Black Tea Bags for Relief

Sunburn is one of the most common skin troubles experienced during the summer when the sun is particularly intense. To prevent sunburn, applying sunscreen can be helpful, but it is important to use it properly to maximize its effectiveness.

On July 17 (local time), the New York Post, citing dermatologists, introduced several methods that can help provide first aid for sunburn caused by sun exposure.

According to these experts, if sunburn is suspected, the very first step should be to lower the skin temperature. After cooling the skin with a cold shower or a cold compress, applying a moisturizer or calamine lotion can help soothe the affected area.

However, it is best to avoid using heavy ointments that form a barrier on the skin, such as Vaseline, as they can trap heat.

If blisters have not yet formed on the skin, black tea can also be used. Placing a cooled black tea bag or a towel soaked in tea on the sunburned area may help temporarily reduce redness, thanks to the antioxidant properties of tea.

Sunburn can be classified as a first-degree burn, which causes redness and a burning sensation, or a second-degree burn, which results in blisters. Symptoms typically begin to appear three to six hours after excessive sun exposure and become most severe between 12 and 24 hours. The condition usually starts to improve after about 72 hours, but it is important to be aware that pigmentation may develop later on the affected skin.

The National Health Information Portal of the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency states that the cause of sunburn is exposure to strong ultraviolet (UV) rays. It is recommended to check the UV index provided by the Korea Meteorological Administration and to avoid outdoor activities on days when the UV index is high or during midday when sunlight is strongest. If going outside is unavoidable, be sure to apply sunscreen. Wearing sunglasses, a hat with a brim, and long-sleeved clothing is also advisable.

Making a habit of applying sunscreen not only prevents sunburn but also helps protect against skin aging caused by UV rays. For sufficient protection, sunscreen should be applied 30 minutes before going outdoors. Its effectiveness diminishes after about two to four hours, so it is best to reapply it after that period.
