Gwangju Mayor Kang Kijeong visited areas that suffered significant damage from heavy rain on the 19th to assess the situation on site.


On this day, Mayor Kang inspected the damage at locations including Sinan Bridge and Sandong Bridge in Buk-gu, Hasin Village, and Taepyeong Bridge in Yangdong, Seo-gu. Since the onset of the heavy rainfall on the 17th, he has been continuously monitoring safety and damage conditions at sites such as Yuchon Bridge, Nongseong Underpass, Yangdong Taepyeong Bridge, and Bitgoeul Craft Village in Nam-gu, and is working on measures to prevent recurrence.


After meeting with residents to identify the most urgent support needs, Mayor Kang reiterated his request to relevant agencies for support from military personnel and other volunteers, prioritizing emergency recovery efforts such as cleaning up flooded homes.


This on-site inspection was particularly aimed at establishing fundamental and practical measures to prevent the recurrence of flood damage, with Mayor Kang listening to residents and others to discuss possible solutions.


On the 17th, Mayor Kang also visited the flooded area around Sinan Bridge in Buk-gu to check the damage, and on the 18th, he requested President Lee Jaemyung to pay special attention to resolving the recurring flooding issues in the Sinan Bridge area.


Mayor Kang stated, "While doing our utmost to ensure emergency recovery so that residents can regain a safe daily life, we will also work closely with the government to enable special support in administration, finance, funding, and medical care needed for disaster relief and recovery."


On the 17th, the Gwangju area recorded a daily maximum rainfall of 426 mm, the highest since meteorological observations began. With heavy rain continuing until the 19th, numerous human and material damages occurred throughout the region. A total of 1,094 cases of damage were reported, including 444 cases of road flooding, 163 cases of road damage, 254 cases of building flooding, 52 cases of vehicle flooding, and 36 cases of fallen trees. As additional reports of damage are still being received, the total extent of the damage is expected to increase further.
