Na Kyungwon, a member of the People Power Party, announced on July 20 that she will not run in the upcoming party convention.
On her Facebook page that day, Na stated, "In a situation marked by division and lethargy, I have carefully considered what role and responsibility I must take on for the party and the country," adding, "I have decided not to run in this party convention."
Na said, "It is truly distressing and regrettable that even party members and the public are now questioning the values and the very purpose of the People Power Party," and continued, "I will focus first and foremost on the roles I can and must play in restoring the party's democracy and fighting spirit, as well as in uniting and rebuilding the party."
She went on to say, "It is time to rekindle the spark of new hope," and added, "Together with those who will truly innovate and rebuild the party, we will overcome this crisis."
The People Power Party plans to hold its party convention in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province, on August 22, where it will elect a new party leader.
