Recognized for Academic, Architectural, and Historical Value
Gokseong County in Jeonnam Province announced on July 19 that the 'Yeongsujeong Area in Gokseong' has been designated as a natural heritage site of Jeonnam Province. This is the first case of a new natural heritage designation in Gokseong County since the transition from the cultural property system to the national heritage system.
Natural heritage refers to cultural heritage that has been formed through the interaction of natural objects or the natural environment, and is recognized for its historical, scenic, and academic value.
Yeongsujeong in Gokseong was established in 1862 as a place for the practice of Hyangyak by the seven major clans of Gokseong during the Joseon Dynasty. It was renovated in 1879 and underwent beam-raising in 1915, remaining in its current state today. The site is managed by the Sunheung Ahn clan association in Ogok-myeon. Yeongsujeong is a heritage that provides insight into the community organization and operation of rural society centered on the private sector.
Yeongsujeong is recognized as a representative example of pavilion architecture in the Honam region, and is valued for its academic significance as research material on traditional pavilion architecture, as well as for its architectural and historical value. It boasts beautiful scenery with wide plains and a flowing river. The various plaques and poetry boards displayed inside offer a glimpse into the cultural aspects of rural society, further affirming its historical value.
Yeongsujeong has been designated as a natural heritage site as it is a space where the village community was practiced in harmony with nature, and as a cultural heritage that has preserved its original form well for over 150 years.
An official from the county stated, "The Yeongsujeong area is the first case in Gokseong to be newly designated as a natural heritage site," adding, "We will continue to do our utmost to preserve and pass down the valuable cultural heritage within our jurisdiction."
