Yoon Beommoh, former director of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, has been appointed as CEO of the Gwangju Biennale Foundation.


On the afternoon of the 18th, Kang Gijeong, Mayor of Gwangju and Chairman of the Gwangju Biennale Foundation, presented the letter of appointment to Yoon Beommoh, CEO of the Gwangju Biennale Foundation, at the city hall reception room. The term of office is three years, until July 17, 2028.


CEO Yoon has been active in the Korean art world for over 40 years as an art critic, art historian, curator, and administrator. Since his debut through the Dong-A Ilbo's New Year's Literary Contest in 1982, he has served as an honorary professor at Gachon University, an honorary chair professor at Dongguk University, and the inaugural president of the Korean Modern and Contemporary Art History Association. In particular, from 2019 to 2023, he served as director of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, contributing to elevating the international status of Korean art.


CEO Yoon also has a deep connection with the Gwangju Biennale. At the founding of the Gwangju Biennale in 1995, he served as an executive committee member and special exhibition curator, and in 2014, he worked as the director of a special exhibition. In addition, he has played key roles in major international events, including as artistic director of the Gyeongju World Culture Expo and general director of the Changwon Sculpture Biennale.


Mayor Kang stated, "CEO Yoon is the right person for the job, with a deep understanding of and extensive field experience in Korean art as a whole," and added, "I hope he will make the upcoming 2025 Gwangju Design Biennale and 2026 Gwangju Biennale events that move the world and resonate globally." He continued, "Gwangju City will also actively support efforts to become a central city for Asian culture and the arts."
