Sejong City Accepting First-Come, First-Served Applications for Early Retirement of Old Vehicles in the Second Half of the Year

334 Remaining Slots Available This Year
Program May Close Early If Budget Is Exhausted

Sejong City Accepting First-Come, First-Served Applications for Early Retirement of Old Vehicles in the Second Half of the Year

On July 18, Sejong City announced that it is currently accepting applications for the remaining slots in its "Early Vehicle Retirement Support Program," which aims to improve air quality and protect public health.

The Early Vehicle Retirement Support Program provides subsidies to citizens who scrap their old diesel vehicles with emission grades 4 or 5. For vehicles under 3.5 tons, owners of grade 4 vehicles can receive up to 8 million won, while owners of grade 5 vehicles can receive up to 3 million won.

The subsidy amount varies depending on the vehicle's age, type, and weight. Owners of livelihood vehicles or vehicles owned by low-income households are eligible for an additional fixed subsidy of 500,000 won. So far, a total of 650 applications have been received, and applications for the remaining 334 slots are being accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. The program may close early if the budget is exhausted.

To qualify for the early vehicle retirement support, the vehicle must have been registered in an air quality management area or in Sejong City for at least six months, and must be in normal operating condition. After scrapping the vehicle, deregistration must be completed within two months from the application date.

In particular, as the vehicle performance inspection and certification procedures have been simplified, making the application process much easier, early closure of the program is expected and prompt applications are recommended.

Kim Eunhee, head of the Environmental Policy Division, stated, "Early vehicle retirement support is an effective policy that reduces both the economic burden on citizens and fine dust emissions," adding, "We plan to combine intensive promotion with swift administrative processing during the remaining period to achieve our goals."
