U.S. Finds Chinese Graphite Subsidies Unfair
Final Decision by December 5

According to a report by Bloomberg News on July 17 (local time), the U.S. Department of Commerce has made a preliminary decision to impose a 93.5% anti-dumping tariff on Chinese graphite, which is used as a key material in batteries.

"US Imposes 93.5% Anti-Dumping Tariff on Chinese Graphite"

According to Bloomberg News, the U.S. Department of Commerce has determined that the Chinese government is providing unfair subsidies to its domestic graphite industry and has therefore made a preliminary decision to impose tariffs on imports of Chinese graphite. The final decision is scheduled to be made by December 5.

This move follows a petition filed by an organization representing the U.S. graphite production industry with federal government agencies in December of last year, requesting an investigation into whether Chinese companies were violating anti-dumping laws.

If the additional 93.5% anti-dumping tariff is imposed, the effective tariff rate on Chinese graphite in the U.S. market would soar to 160%.

The anti-dumping tariff is a trade remedy system in which tariffs are imposed within the range of the price difference when foreign goods are sold below their normal value and cause harm to domestic industries.
