Yoon to Attend Detention Warrant Review Tomorrow After Refusing Special Prosecution and Insurrection Trials, Citing Deteriorating Health

"An Unavoidable Decision to Appeal Directly"
Yoon, After Being Re-detained on the 10th,
Refused to Attend Two Insurrection Trials and Three Forced Summons

Former President Yoon Sukyeol will personally attend a detention warrant review hearing at the court, challenging the legitimacy of his arrest by the Cho Eunseok Special Prosecution Team for insurrection. Although Yoon has refused to appear at two previous insurrection trials and during three attempts by the Cho Eunseok Special Prosecution Team to forcibly bring him in, he will attend the hearing regarding his detention warrant review.

Yoon to Attend Detention Warrant Review Tomorrow After Refusing Special Prosecution and Insurrection Trials, Citing Deteriorating Health

On July 17, Yoon's legal representatives announced that he is scheduled to personally appear at the detention warrant review hearing to be held on July 18 before the Criminal Appellate Division 9-2 of the Seoul Central District Court (Presiding Judges Ryu Changseong, Jeong Hyewon, and Choi Bowon).

The detention warrant review is a procedure in which the court examines whether the arrest of a suspect is lawful and whether continued detention is necessary. Within 48 hours of the application being filed, the court interrogates the suspect and examines evidence to comprehensively reassess the requirements and necessity for detention. During this period, all investigations of Yoon by the authorities are suspended.

Yoon's side stated, "Regardless of the substantive dispute over the charges, this is an unavoidable decision to directly appeal to the court regarding his severely deteriorated health condition," adding, "Given that it is virtually impossible for him to attend regular criminal trials or special prosecution hearings, he will appear at this hearing to personally explain his health status."

Previously, on July 16, Yoon's legal team filed for a detention warrant review at the Seoul Central District Court. Since being detained at Seoul Detention Center, Yoon has repeatedly refused to comply with requests from the special prosecution team to appear.

On the same day, Yoon also failed to attend the 11th trial on charges of leading an insurrection and abuse of power, presided over by Judge Ji Gwiyoun of the Seoul Central District Court's Criminal Division 25. Yoon's attorney stated, "He is in a very difficult situation due to his sudden detention. Even before, he regularly took medication for diabetes and high blood pressure, and now he finds it extremely difficult to climb stairs due to dizziness," adding, "Because of these circumstances, it is very hard for him to remain seated for long periods during the trial."
