'Record-Breaking Rainfall': President Lee to Visit Disaster Situation Room on the 18th to Assess Response Efforts Yonhap News

On the 17th, the Presidential Office announced that it had canceled the Busan Regional Development Citizens' Meeting, which was scheduled to be held in Busan on the 18th following previous meetings in Honam and Chungcheong. The Presidential Office explained, "The assessment of the flood damage and the comprehensive response by the government and local authorities will take place at the Central Disaster and Safety Situation Room in the Seoul Situation Center."

President Lee had originally planned to visit Busan to hold a town hall-style meeting with residents to discuss regional development strategies. In particular, he was set to address key issues such as the relocation of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries to Busan, a major campaign pledge, and the development of the Arctic shipping route.

For the second consecutive day, record-breaking heavy rainfall has continued nationwide, resulting in flooded vehicles and homes, as well as multiple casualties. The Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters (CDSCH) convened a meeting on this day to respond to the torrential rains and issued the highest level of disaster alert, 'serious.' In particular, the CDSCH activated Level 3, raising the emergency response posture of ministries and related agencies to the highest level. This is the first time in one year and eleven months since August 2023 that Level 3 has been issued by the CDSCH.
