K Bank Establishes Financial Sector's First Cloud-Based Disaster Recovery Backup Center

"Innovating the Traditional Tape Backup Method in Banking"
Cloud Storage via Dedicated Backup Line
No Need for Separate Physical Equipment

K Bank announced on July 17 that it has established a next-generation backup system by converting its disaster recovery backup center to the cloud, becoming the first in the financial sector to do so.

A disaster recovery backup center is a dedicated facility for data backup and separate storage, operated to securely protect and quickly restore data in the event of emergencies such as disasters or calamities. As a core safety net for a bank's IT infrastructure, it is managed separately in an external location that is physically isolated from the main disaster recovery data center.

Previously, banks used a tape backup (PTL) method, in which data was transferred to magnetic tapes and then physically stored in fireproof vaults within the disaster recovery backup center. However, magnetic tapes are highly susceptible to deterioration due to environmental changes such as temperature and humidity, or over time, leading to a significant risk of data damage and clear limitations in terms of storage reliability. There are also various constraints, such as the costs of maintaining physical infrastructure and inefficiencies related to backup management personnel.

To address these issues, K Bank has transitioned its disaster recovery backup center to a cloud-based system, overcoming the limitations of tape backup and building a next-generation backup system with enhanced security and reliability. With this cloud transition, backup data can now be securely stored in a cloud center, rather than in a physical location or on physical equipment.

In particular, since data is transmitted only through dedicated backup lines, external access is completely blocked, ensuring both security and stability. The absence of physical devices eliminates the risk of equipment loss or damage. Costs associated with operating security facilities such as fireproof vaults, access control, and CCTV are reduced, and management personnel requirements are minimized, greatly improving operational efficiency. The lack of physical location or geographical constraints enables stable response even in the event of nationwide incidents.

A K Bank representative stated, "The establishment of this cloud-based disaster recovery backup center is a case of digital innovation that improves upon the limitations of traditional tape backup and enhances both security and efficiency. We will continue to strengthen our technological competitiveness and evolve as a leading tech-driven bank that provides stable financial services."
