"Shows a Significant Difference from Actual Specifications"
"Fold7 Wins by a Landslide Both Folded and Unfolded"
Chinese smartphone brand Honor has launched its latest product, the Magic V5, promoting it as the "world's thinnest foldable phone." However, the device has become embroiled in controversy over allegedly false specifications. This arose after an overseas user conducted a hands-on comparison test with Samsung's new foldable, the Galaxy Fold7, and found a significant difference in thickness both when folded and unfolded.
On July 16, overseas online communities featured photos and videos comparing the thickness of the Honor V5, released on July 2, and Samsung's new Galaxy Z Fold7. Well-known IT tipster UniverseIce posted a comparison video on X (formerly Twitter), placing the two devices side by side, placing a card on top, and pressing down on the edges to demonstrate the difference.
In the video, when pressing on the V5, it was visually apparent that the opposite end of the card slightly lifted at the point where it met the Fold7. UniverseIce stated, "The Fold7 is the world's thinnest foldable phone. Even when switching the positions of the two devices during the test, the results remained the same," adding, "This shows that the experiment is valid even when eliminating the influence of an uneven desk surface."
A similar hands-on review was posted on a popular U.S. social community. Using a micrometer to measure the thickness, the V5 was found to be 9.417mm when folded and 4.536mm when unfolded. In contrast, the Fold7 measured 8.790mm when folded and 4.287mm when unfolded.
These results differ significantly from Honor's official specifications. Honor claimed that the V5 is approximately 8.8mm thick when folded and about 4.1mm when unfolded, marketing it as the "world's thinnest foldable smartphone." However, the actual measurements showed differences of 0.617mm and 0.436mm, respectively.
