The Hwasean Underpass extension project is a major urban infrastructure initiative being pursued by Suwon City to alleviate traffic congestion and prevent recurring flood damage.

The project is being carried out in three phases. The first phase involves extending the existing 290-meter Hwasean Underpass to 539 meters, with construction having begun in October 2022.

The second phase consists of improving the connection road (126 meters long) to the existing underpass, while the third phase will add a 370-meter underground bus ramp toward Homeasil and a 278-meter underground bus ramp toward Gwanggyo.
