Eight members of the student volunteer corps attended the luncheon, where they recalled the moment they voluntarily enlisted with rifles in hand during their school days and took time to honor the sacrifice of their comrades who died anonymously.
Mayor Lee Kangdeok stated, "The noble spirit of the student volunteer soldiers, who gave everything for the country, continues to serve as a model for our society," emphasizing, "Pohang City will remember and carry on their spirit of sacrifice together with our citizens."
He added, "We will continue to strengthen social respect and support for national patriots in the future."
The student volunteer corps refers to students who enlisted voluntarily without military serial numbers during the Korean War. In the Pohang area, they participated in battles in Gigae, Angang, Yeongdeok, and Pohang Girls' Middle School, making significant contributions to the victory of the national forces.
The city plans to hold the 69th Memorial Ceremony for Fallen Student Volunteer Soldiers on August 11, with about 150 participants including members of the student volunteer corps, bereaved families, and heads of related organizations and veterans' groups.
