LG Uplus to Prevent Solitary Deaths in Single-Person Households Using Telecom Data in Collaboration with KEPCO

Participation in Well-being Monitoring Service for Single-Person Households
Establishment of a Dedicated Network for Mutual Data Linkage

On July 13, LG Uplus announced that it will participate in the "Single-Person Household Well-being Monitoring Service," which detects abnormal signs in single-person households using data to prevent solitary deaths, in collaboration with Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO). This service, which KEPCO has been implementing since 2021 as part of building a social safety net, was introduced to address social issues such as the isolation of single-person households and solitary deaths.

Currently, power usage data collected by each household's Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) enables the early detection of abnormal patterns such as prolonged periods of no electricity usage or sudden changes in consumption. When this is combined with LG Uplus's telecommunications data, such as call and data usage patterns, the detection accuracy is expected to improve significantly, while unnecessary false alarms are expected to decrease substantially.

Detected crisis signals are transmitted to local governments. If necessary, AI will automatically attempt a welfare check call, or a welfare officer will directly verify and respond in person.

According to KEPCO, the service has so far helped save the lives of 13 people, reduced the burden of welfare officers' calls and visits by more than 86 percent, and achieved cost savings of approximately 690 billion won compared to existing IoT-based services.

KEPCO has established a more precise and efficient welfare check system by utilizing power data to identify abnormal signs early and by combining it with AI analysis of telecommunications data. LG Uplus plans to contribute to building a social safety net by establishing a dedicated network for secure data linkage in cooperation with KEPCO.

Jongun Park, Head of ICT Planning at KEPCO, stated, "In an era where AI and data save lives, technology has become another form of social infrastructure that protects our lives. I hope this agreement will serve as a practical step toward a society without gaps in care." Janghyuk Lim, Executive Vice President and Head of Corporate Customer Group at LG Uplus, said, "We will continue to cooperate with KEPCO to develop data-driven social safety net services and new digital businesses."
