KIOST and Korea Quantum Computing Sign Agreement to Lead Quantum Computing Technology in Marine Research

The Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST), led by Director Heeseung Lee, signed a business agreement on July 10, 2025, at the KIOST headquarters in Busan (located in Yeongdo-gu, Busan) with Korea Quantum Computing (KQC), chaired by Jihoon Kwon. The purpose of the agreement is to strengthen the growth engine based on science, technology, and digital innovation by integrating quantum computing technology into the field of marine research.

Under this agreement, the two organizations plan to cooperate in developing technologies related to quantum algorithms for predicting changes in the marine environment and ecosystem, such as ocean numerical modeling and AI. They will also collaborate in planning applied research projects, including marine pollution tracking and monitoring, climate change response, and marine resource management.


KIOST has been conducting research to improve the accuracy of marine forecasts using ocean numerical modeling and intelligent information technology, as well as studies that assess the impact of the marine environment by applying numerical modeling techniques. Meanwhile, KQC is leading the development of infrastructure and networks essential for the quantum computing industry in Korea.


Heeseung Lee, Director of KIOST, stated, "This business agreement is expected to serve as a turning point for dramatically enhancing our research capabilities by combining KIOST's expertise with KQC's quantum technology capabilities. We anticipate it will enable us to accurately analyze and predict complex ocean phenomena, such as conducting high-resolution long-term simulations and developing ultra-precise pollutant dispersion prediction technologies."
