Orders to Strengthen Local Governments' Authority
for Unannounced Inspections at Industrial Sites
On July 10, President Lee Jaemyung ordered a prompt inspection of cooling centers and other facilities operated by local governments across the country in response to the ongoing heatwave.
According to Presidential Office spokesperson Lee Guyoun, President Lee gave these instructions during a meeting with senior aides at the Presidential Office that afternoon.
President Lee also stated, "Please thoroughly check not only how many cooling centers have been designated nationwide, but also the specific operational status and actual performance of these centers."
Additionally, after receiving a report on the comprehensive industrial safety measures, President Lee said, "For industrial sites with potential hazards, there must be the ability to conduct unannounced inspections," and added, "The number of labor inspectors must be significantly increased compared to the current level." Spokesperson Lee further conveyed that President Lee instructed local governments to strengthen their authority to inspect high-risk industrial sites.
President Lee also pointed out that as many as 40 people take their own lives each day and, according to spokesperson Lee, instructed, "Swiftly implement any measures that can be put into action immediately, using a rolling implementation approach."
