Fire and Flooding Drill Conducted at Navy's Jinhae Base Damage Control Training Center
Preparedness Training for Complex Scenarios Including Fires, Flooding, and Attacks
On July 10, the Ongjin, a vessel belonging to the Navy's 5th Mine Landing Squadron, conducted a 'damage control drill' at the Jinhae base damage control training center in South Gyeongsang Province. The drill was held to prepare for possible ship damage scenarios such as fire, flooding, and attacks.
Damage control is a core mission that ensures the survivability of a vessel by controlling damage and risk factors, and it is directly linked to maintaining combat capability.
The drill simulated a crisis in which seawater was flooding into the engine room due to a hull breach. As the alarm sounded and the command "Hull breach in the engine room!" was issued, the crew members, following the instructions of the chief engineer, took positions in each area and used their bodies to block the powerful streams of water entering the ship. In complete darkness caused by a power outage, they calmly confirmed that there was no further damage before concluding the drill.
Approximately 40 crew members participated in the drill, which focused on enabling the crew to work together to protect both the vessel and their own lives and safety, as well as to maintain combat readiness, by simulating an actual combat situation.
Going forward, the Ongjin plans to continuously repeat and master essential training exercises in order to establish an unwavering response posture, even in unexpected situations.
Jung Dongyun (Captain), chief engineer of the Ongjin, stated, "Damage control is like a fierce battle fought by the crew inside the vessel," adding, "Through this drill, we will strengthen our crisis response capabilities as a strong navy by conducting intensive training to prepare for a wide range of unpredictable combat situations and threats."
