Delivering Philosophical Themes and Messages on Human Existence for Deep Audience Immersion
At the Haman Culture and Arts Center in Gyeongnam, the original musical "Sisyphus," which drew attention by winning three awards?including the Original Musical Award, Rising Creator Award, and Best Supporting Actress Award?at the Daegu International Musical Festival (DIMF), will be performed at the Grand Theater of the Haman Culture and Arts Center on Saturday, July 12, with shows at 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
The musical "Sisyphus" is a narrative that skillfully combines Albert Camus' renowned novel "The Stranger" with the Greek mythological figure Sisyphus, delivering a profound message about human existence and the search for meaning amid recurring suffering.
Set in a fictional future world devastated by war and pandemic, the story follows four actors who gather on stage to revisit their lives and begin telling their stories anew.
This work premiered in 2024 as an original production by Orchard Musical Company (formerly Orchard Musical Company) and was selected as one of the six final works supported by the DIMF Creative Support Project. At the time of its performance, it received acclaim from both audiences and critics for its strong sense of immersion and symbolic stage direction.
"Sisyphus" is expected to achieve deep resonance with the audience by expressing its philosophical message through an emotionally charged stage. The actors, who continue to push the stone uphill despite the burden of a repetitive life, inspire the audience to reflect on their own realities.
In particular, musical numbers such as "Stage," "The Stranger," and "No Way Out," which appear throughout the production, amplify the musical’s impact by expressing philosophical themes through dramatic melodies.
The stage design is also one of the production’s greatest strengths. The actors’ vitality, writhing amid ruins on an inclined plane symbolizing Sisyphus’s stone, transforms the stage into an art space in itself.
As a result, the audience encounters the work through a sensory experience that goes beyond simple "viewing." Especially notable is the dynamic stage movement, rarely seen in Daehakro performances, which dramatically expands the scale of the show and delivers an immersive, vibrant experience.
This Haman performance is expected to contribute to expanding the local performing arts scene by giving local residents a chance to directly experience creative content typically centered in the capital region.
Through this production, the Haman Culture and Arts Center hopes that audiences will experience an artistic resonance that prompts them to reflect on the direction of life and the meaning of existence, rather than simply seeking entertainment.
Tickets for "Sisyphus" can be reserved on the Haman Culture and Arts Center website. The show is recommended for ages 8 and up, with all seats priced at 30,000 won.
