Pusan National University has formalized its collaboration with the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland (NMIS), a world-class advanced manufacturing research institution in the United Kingdom, adding international momentum to manufacturing innovation in the southeastern region of Korea.
Pusan National University (President Choi Jaewon) signed a strategic business agreement with the University of Strathclyde, located in Glasgow, Scotland, on the 1st (local time), and will engage in personnel exchanges and joint research on manufacturing technologies with NMIS and its affiliated institutions.

The University of Strathclyde is recognized as a world-leading institution in the fields of marine and shipbuilding, and serves as a hub for advanced manufacturing technology research, housing NMIS and the Advanced Forming Research Center (AFRC).
Through this agreement, the two institutions will jointly promote the development of advanced manufacturing technologies and the cultivation of talent that meet the demands of the Fourth Industrial Revolution era. NMIS, which includes global companies such as Rolls-Royce and Boeing among its participants, operates a research network across Europe focused on lightweighting, digital factories, and smart manufacturing technologies.
Pusan National University plans to link the Ministry of Education’s regionally focused university support system, the RISE (Regional Innovation System for Education) project, with this collaboration to provide practical exchange opportunities to companies in Busan and the southeastern region, together with the Korea Institute of Advanced Manufacturing Technology, which is capable of technological cooperation with NMIS in the UK. In particular, Pusan National University’s core strategic fields?such as power semiconductors, future mobility, defense, energy, and digital/AI manufacturing technologies?closely align with NMIS’s research focus areas, raising expectations for synergistic effects.
Pusan National University will dispatch professors, students, and local corporate researchers to NMIS for training and joint research. In addition, to mark the university’s 80th anniversary next year, Pusan National University plans to invite officials from the University of Strathclyde to Busan to further expand industry-academia-research collaboration.
Prior to the agreement with NMIS, President Choi Jaewon also visited the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) at the University of Sheffield to seek advice on establishing a “Busan-style AMRC.” During this visit, he met with Professor Keith Ridgway, founder of the AMRC in the UK, to discuss plans for a customized innovation center for manufacturing in the Busan region.
President Choi stated, “This collaboration is an important starting point for enhancing the international competitiveness of Pusan National University and creating an innovation ecosystem for industry-academia-research cooperation that will drive the advancement of regional industries. We will actively work to elevate the competitiveness of specialized industries in the southeastern region to a world-class level.”
