"I Will Repay Party Members Through a 'Nomination Revolution'"
Representative Ahn Cheolsoo of the People Power Party, who has declared his candidacy for the party convention, pledged on July 10 to implement a full party member nomination system in next year's local elections.
On this day, Representative Ahn stated on social networking services (SNS), "In next year's local elections, the candidates for metropolitan mayor and governor will be chosen by party members," announcing this plan.
Representative Ahn emphasized, "The central party will focus solely on fair and transparent nomination management," and asserted, "Those who neglect regional development and focus on central politics just to secure a nomination will have no place in the party."
Representative Ahn also recalled the previous presidential election, saying, "At that time, party members resolutely blocked the unfair, unjust, unconstitutional, and anti-democratic last-minute coup attempt to replace the presidential candidate at dawn," referring to the party member vote that prevented the attempt to replace then-presidential candidate Kim Moonsoo of the People Power Party. He added, "The courage and dedication of party members will be remembered in history," and stressed, "I will become party leader and repay your will through a 'nomination revolution.'"
Previously, Representative Ahn had accepted the position of chairman of the party innovation committee, but failed to reach an agreement with Song Eonseok, the acting emergency committee chairman and floor leader, regarding the personnel reform plan and the composition of the innovation committee. As a result, he resigned from the innovation committee chairmanship and declared his candidacy for the party convention.
