On the 10th, SK On announced that it had received a total of two international certifications from the global testing and certification organization TUV Rheinland: the CSA and the Functional Safety Management System (FSMS) Level 3 certification.
The CSA is granted to products developed and verified based on a Cyber Security Management System (CSMS), while the FSMS certification is awarded to companies with management systems in place to ensure vehicle safety and prevent accidents. Among the five levels, SK On is the first to achieve Level 3 certification in the BMS field.
SK On plans to supply this BMS product, together with battery cells and modules, to European automakers. This BMS, which will be installed in actual vehicles, has demonstrated its technological superiority in automotive cyber security by securing both excellent security and credibility.
In addition, SK On obtained Level 3 certification for its Cyber Security Management System (CSMS) based on the international standard ISO/SAE 21434 in May. The CSMS certification is granted to companies with the capability to systematically manage cyber security risks for automotive software and electrical and electronic components.
Meanwhile, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) enacted the 'UNR155' vehicle cyber security regulation in 2021. As a result, since July last year, new vehicles must have CSMS certification to be sold in the European Union (EU), North America, Asia, and 56 other UNECE member countries. This applies to internal combustion engine vehicles and eco-friendly vehicles equipped with electronic control units.
Ko Jungwoon, Head of System-Based Technology Development at SK On, said, "Through this certification, not only has the technological prowess of SK On's BMS been recognized, but also the company's capabilities in security and functional safety management have been internationally accredited. We will gradually expand the scope of application through strategic discussions with major global automakers."
