Hyundai to Mass-Produce Vehicle Integrating Autonomous Driving and SDV Technologies by 2028

July 9 Autonomous Driving Mobility Industry Expo
Presentation by Kyungmin Lee, Head of Autonomous Driving Software Development at Hyundai Motor Company

Hyundai Motor Company will unveil an autonomous vehicle in 2028 that integrates artificial intelligence (AI)-powered autonomous driving and infotainment technologies. The company plans to sequentially introduce 'Level 2+' driving assistance features starting in 2027 and, by 2028, launch a mass-produced vehicle that incorporates all currently developing autonomous driving technologies.

On July 9, Kyungmin Lee, Head of Autonomous Driving Software Development at Hyundai Motor Company, announced this plan during a keynote speech titled "Advancing the Future of Smart Driving" at the Autonomous Driving Mobility Industry Expo held at COEX in Gangnam-gu, Seoul.

Lee stated, "Cars, like smartphones, must continuously provide customers with the latest experiences," and introduced Hyundai's infotainment system 'Gleos AI' and autonomous driving platform 'Atria AI,' both currently under development.

The AI-powered infotainment system Gleos assists 'Level 2+' semi-autonomous driving by providing optimal routes and available lanes when a destination is entered by voice and recognizing traffic signals. Upon arrival at the destination, it automatically notifies the driver or enables multiple functions to be performed through a single voice command, offering interactive features.

Taking it a step further, Hyundai is also developing an autonomous driving system that allows drivers to take their hands off the steering wheel. With the autonomous driving technology 'Atria AI,' advanced vehicles will be able to actively recognize and respond to sudden obstacles on the road, make emergency stops, or overtake vehicles parked on the shoulder, enabling more proactive autonomous driving capabilities.

Lee commented, "The current autonomous driving market is reaching a turning point as performance improves through the end-to-end approach," and added, "Hyundai is also developing autonomous driving technology using the end-to-end method, which increases data dependency."

Hyundai plans to release a Level 2+ autonomous vehicle equipped with Atria AI in the fourth quarter of 2027. A full-stack vehicle, which will integrate all currently developing technologies for a higher level of completeness, is scheduled for release in 2028.

Lee also mentioned that vehicles with Level 3 autonomous driving, which allow drivers to take their eyes and hands off the driving task, have already been technically completed. He stated, "Autonomous driving that enables a driver to travel without watching the road ahead is already technically feasible. However, regulatory issues must be resolved before the technology can be implemented."
