Seodaemun-gu to Grant One Extra Day of Leave to Soldiers Visiting Seodaemun Prison History Hall

Designation of Seodaemun Prison History Hall as a "Reward System for Visiting Memorial Facilities" Site
Ordinance Revised to Provide Free Admission to Soldiers

On July 8, Seodaemun-gu in Seoul announced that, starting next month, military soldiers who visit the Seodaemun Prison History Hall (251 Tongil-ro) will be granted one extra day of leave.

The district has been working with the Ministry of National Defense to have Seodaemun Prison History Hall designated as an eligible facility under the "Reward System for Visiting Memorial Facilities." The aim is to help soldiers reflect on the history of sacrifice and dedication for the nation through their visit. Previously, only facilities such as the Independence Hall of Korea and the War Memorial of Korea were included in the program. The method for verifying visits is currently under discussion with the Ministry of National Defense.

Additionally, Seodaemun-gu, in consultation with the Seodaemun District Council, has revised the relevant ordinance to provide free admission to soldiers in uniform. Previously, a 50% discount was applied.

Lee Seongheon, Mayor of Seodaemun-gu, stated, "We hope that the increase in soldiers visiting Seodaemun Prison History Hall as a result of this new system will help foster their sense of security and strengthen their determination to defend the nation."

Seodaemun Prison History Hall is a site where numerous independence activists, including Yu Gwansun, who died after being arrested during the March 1st Movement, endured hardship. Every year, Seodaemun-gu commemorates the March 1st Movement and Liberation Day by hosting events such as "Seodaemun, 1919: The Shouts of That Day" and the "Seodaemun Independence Festival."
