Extended Driving Range with NCM Battery
Kia unveiled the interior and exterior design of its electrified family sport utility vehicle (SUV), the EV5, on July 8.
The EV5 is Kia's fifth dedicated electric vehicle and is the brand's first compact electric SUV to feature an authentic SUV body. Although developed as an affordable model targeting emerging markets such as China, it has been adapted for the Korean market and is scheduled for domestic release in the second half of this year.
The most significant change is the inclusion of an 81.4 kWh NCM (nickel-cobalt-manganese) battery, which extends the vehicle's driving range. Kia plans to announce the detailed specifications of the new EV5, including the GT-line, at the time of launch.
The exterior design is characterized by a dynamic silhouette with a sense of volume, based on Kia's design philosophy of "Opposites United" (creative fusion of contrasting concepts).
The wide and robust skid plate and bonnet at the front give the vehicle a strong impression. Vertically arranged LED headlamps and daytime running lights (DRLs) featuring Star Map signature lighting inspired by constellations have been applied.
On the side, the tailgate and D-pillar (the rear pillar of the body) emphasize straight lines, providing ample rear seat space and a spacious trunk. At the rear, the vertically and horizontally extended rear combination lamps firmly anchor both sides, while the clean and wide tailgate design enhances the sophisticated image.
The interior is designed with a simple image that harmonizes with nature, providing comfort for both the driver and passengers.
Kia has equipped the EV5 with a panoramic wide display that integrates a 12.3-inch cluster, a 12.3-inch infotainment system display, and a 5-inch climate control display. The panoramic wide display makes the interior space appear even more expansive.
Additionally, Kia has maximized convenience and practicality by providing ample console storage space in the first row of the EV5. A three-zone climate controller allows independent temperature control for the driver’s seat, passenger seat, and second row. Notably, when the second-row fully flat folding seats are folded forward to create a horizontal surface, the spacious trunk area can be utilized even more efficiently.
A Kia representative stated, "The EV5 is a model that sets a new standard for the era of widespread EV adoption in Korea by harmonizing innovation in electrification technology with practicality. With the inherently spacious interior of an SUV and the inclusion of an 81.4 kWh NCM battery, it offers an extended driving range and a variety of mobility experiences."
