"Leading Carbon Neutrality"... Gwangju City Raises Hydrogen Vehicle Subsidy

33 Million Won Subsidy for Hyundai's New NEXO
Additional 500,000 Won for Multi-Child Households

"Leading Carbon Neutrality"... Gwangju City Raises Hydrogen Vehicle Subsidy New hydrogen passenger car.

On July 7, Gwangju City announced that it will raise the purchase subsidy for Hyundai's new hydrogen car model, 'The All New NEXO,' to 33 million won, in line with the vehicle's launch date.

This amount is an increase of 500,000 won compared to the hydrogen vehicle purchase subsidy provided over the past seven years. In addition, households with two or more children under the age of 18 will receive an extra 500,000 won from the city as an incentive, making them eligible for a total subsidy of up to 33.5 million won. The multi-child household incentive will be implemented on a trial basis this year, with plans to review its possible expansion in the future.

The application process for citizens will also be improved. The residency requirement, which previously mandated at least 90 days of residence in Gwangju as of the application date, has been significantly relaxed to 30 days or more. Applications for the subsidy will be accepted until December 5, but may close earlier if the budget is exhausted. Citizens wishing to apply should visit a Hyundai Motor branch or dealership in Gwangju for consultation and contract signing, and then submit the required documents.

If the vehicle is deregistered within two years of purchase (or exported within five years) or is re-registered in another region, the subsidy will be reclaimed based on the period of vehicle use. The responsibility for subsidy repayment lies with the vehicle owner at the time of the relevant event, so sellers must clearly state this information in the contract when selling the used car.

Na Byungchun, Director of the Climate and Air Policy Division, said, "We expect demand for hydrogen vehicles to increase with the launch of the new model and the higher subsidy," adding, "We will actively support Gwangju's transformation into a leading carbon-neutral city through the distribution of zero-emission hydrogen vehicles."

Meanwhile, the new Hyundai NEXO hydrogen vehicle will be showcased at the Gwangju City booth during the '2025 Climate Energy Expo' held at the Kimdaejung Convention Center from July 9 to 11, where visitors can receive explanations about the vehicle from professional car managers.
