Muju County in North Jeolla Province is moving forward with a project to upgrade old sewage pipelines at 21 small-scale public sewage treatment facilities in the region.

According to the county on July 7, the project will break ground this month with completion targeted for next year. The total project cost is expected to reach 10.7 billion won. The plan includes excavating and replacing 8.8 kilometers of sewage pipelines and replacing 148 manholes.

The project is based on the results of a technical inspection of the sewage pipelines. In 21 small village sewage treatment areas within the county, the continued inflow of unidentified water (water with unclear sources of contamination) due to aging, subsidence, and damage to the pipelines has made it difficult to operate the sewage treatment facilities stably.

Park Bongyeol, head of the sewage team in the Water Supply and Sewerage Division, stated, "Through this project, we aim to extend the lifespan of the sewage pipelines and also work to prevent ground subsidence accidents such as road sinkholes. Above all, by fundamentally blocking the inflow of unidentified water, we will maximize the efficiency of the sewage treatment facilities and further contribute to improving public health and protecting water quality and the environment."

He added, "Following the expansion of public sewage treatment facilities in Muju-eup and Anseong-myeon, we will do our utmost to ensure that the project to upgrade old pipelines at small-scale public sewage treatment facilities becomes a solid foundation for creating a pleasant and safe living environment and for the sustainable development of Muju."

To ensure the smooth progress of the project to upgrade old sewage pipelines at 21 small-scale public sewage treatment facilities in the region, the county secured national funding and carried out basic and detailed design services in 2023. In June of this year, it completed administrative procedures such as consultations with the Ministry of Environment regarding funding.
