Jeollanam-do Governor Kim Youngrok recently visited a senior center in Boseong-gun that has been designated as a heatwave shelter to inspect its operations. He also urged local governments to make every possible effort to prevent any damage caused by the heatwave.
On this day, Governor Kim visited the Juboeng Senior Center in Boseong, checked the status of the facility and its operations, personally checked on the well-being of the elderly using the center to escape the heat, and listened to their difficulties.
Jeonnam Province has established a comprehensive heatwave response plan, providing cooling expenses to 9,275 senior centers and extending the operation of heatwave shelters, thereby taking preemptive measures against the early heatwave.
In addition, disaster assistants check on the well-being of seniors daily and provide guidance on heat illness prevention measures, while life support workers check on the well-being of low-income, vulnerable elderly people aged 65 and older, putting every effort into preventing heatwave-related damage.
Governor Kim stated, "We will extend the operating hours of senior centers by three hours, from the previous 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., due to the heatwave. In addition, we will provide an emergency cooling expense of 100,000 won, fully funded by the province, to all approximately 9,500 senior centers."
He added, "I am grateful that both the elderly and residents have actively cooperated in preventing damage from the early stages of the heatwave. I urge everyone to refrain from going out or engaging in outdoor activities during the hot daytime hours and to drink water regularly and frequently as the heatwave continues."
