Establishing a Youth Employment Creation Model Based on Local Resources
Full-Scale Policy Response at the City Council Level
The Gumi City Council in Gyeongbuk has begun earnest efforts to address the issue of youth employment in the region.
Gumi City Council in Gyeongbuk is holding the inauguration ceremony and kickoff briefing for the Youth Job Policy Research Group.
On July 1, the council's legislative research group, the Youth Job Policy Research Group, held its inauguration ceremony and policy research kickoff briefing in the small conference room on the third floor of Gumi City Hall's main building. The group has started work on developing strategies to create youth jobs by utilizing local resources.
The research group is led by Councilor Jung Jiweon and includes a total of eight city council members: Kim Nakgwan, Yang Jino, Kim Chunnam, Jang Segu, Shin Yongha, So Jinhyuk, and Kim Wonseop.
The group plans to develop effective job policy models based on Gumi's diverse local resources, such as its industrial, cultural, and public infrastructure. The goal is to encourage young people to settle in the region and to address the outflow of the youth population.
Jung Jiweon, the group’s representative, stated, "It is very regrettable that young people are leaving the region in search of better opportunities. We will develop concrete policy alternatives that encompass support for youth entrepreneurship and employment so that not a single young person is left behind and all can plan their future here."
Park Gyosang, the chairperson of the Gumi City Council, who attended the kickoff briefing, emphasized, "Since the start of the eighth popularly elected administration, Gumi has attracted over 8 trillion won in corporate investment. However, it will take time for these investments to translate into actual employment effects. This research group will serve as a starting point for developing policy alternatives that local youth can truly feel and for building a sustainable ecosystem where young people can settle."
The research will be conducted through the end of 2024, based on policy analysis by a professional research institute. The final results will be reflected in the council's legislative activities and in Gumi City's youth employment initiatives.
Through this research group, the Gumi City Council aims not only to create short-term employment opportunities but also to strengthen policy support and institutional backing at the council level for a long-term and structural youth policy framework.
