"Clean Port, Stronger Proactive Measures"... BPA Launches Intensive Inspection of Long-term Moored Vessels at Busan Port

Busan Port Authority (BPA) has launched a focused inspection of vessels that have been moored or abandoned for extended periods within Busan Port.

Starting June 26, BPA will conduct a comprehensive survey of mooring conditions for barges, refueling vessels, and other ships, focusing on major collective mooring sites such as Pier 5 and Bongnae-dong Pier, over a period of approximately two weeks.

This inspection aims not only to ensure the safety of vessels moored for long periods, but also to proactively eliminate potential sources of marine pollution.

This initiative is being carried out as part of an enhanced proactive marine accident prevention system, which was strengthened following an oil spill incident involving an abandoned vessel at Pier 5 in September of last year. At that time, BPA, in cooperation with the Busan Regional Office of Oceans and Fisheries and the Namhae Regional Coast Guard, scrapped five abandoned or long-term moored vessels and repaired two others.

Building on the results of this collaboration, the three agencies signed the "MOU for Strengthened Management of Long-term Moored Vessels" on May 29 of this year. Through this agreement, they plan to reinforce preventive measures for high-risk vessels and fundamentally block the possibility of marine pollution incidents within Busan Port.

Song Sanggeun, President of BPA, stated, "While increasing cargo volume and strengthening port competitiveness are important, above all, it is fundamental to protect citizens' safety and maintain a clean ocean." He emphasized, "We will do our utmost to create a safe and clean Busan Port based on close cooperation with relevant agencies."
